1000 by Jean Patou c1972

1000 de Jean Patou was released in 1972.  I have read that it was to be only a limited edition perfume released only a few times a year.

Parfums Jean Patou asked Jean Kerleo to create a new perfume, which they named 1000 (in French, Mille), to be envisioned as a "super-Joy." The resulting scent emerged from a painstaking ten-year trial and error period in which a reported 1000 different blends were created then rejected but existed in the laboratory, so they named the perfume after it's lab number, 1000.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral fragrance for women. It begins with a green flowery top, followed by a rose enhanced floral heart, resting on a sensual, woody floral base.
  • Top notes: Chinese osmanthus, estragon, angelica, Sicilian bergamot, coriander, Bulgarian rose, leafy green note
  • Middle notes: selected Grasse jasmine absolute, geranium, damascena rose, lily of the valley, orris, eucalyptus, May rose
  • Base notes: Mysore sandalwood, Tyrolean oakmoss, patchouli, pure violet absolute, Haitian vetiver, Abyssinian civet, Tonkin musk, amber

It was a totally unique blend of the time, for it contained some of the richest and rarest essences in the world. Viola odorata, rose centifolia, Mysore santal, jasmine grandiflorum, and exotic osmanthus from China gave 1000 its extraordinary velvety scent. Osmanthus is the rarest of them all, having been brought by yak from northern China to one Canton market. Since osmanthus only blooms three weeks a year, its rarity limited the production of 1000.

Known as "the essence of extravagance," the 1000 scent is made from a jasmine essence that takes over seven million flowers to produce a single kilogram.

Connaissance des arts, 1986:
"Is it unreasonable to like to travel around your room, to seek exoticism between four walls, to recreate a universe of fashion through objects and souvenirs, to find light from the shadows? Is it unreasonable to go through a thousand and one tries before finding the unique fragrance, the mystery perfume with magical powers?

"No", replies Jean de Mouy, the young Chairman and CEO of Jean Patou, and grand-nephew of the great couturier, "the rare element [osmanthus] that when 1000 was launched in 1972, its production had to be limited to a thousand bottles in each size, hence its name, which took on the appearance of a fateful finality."

The recent opening of the market with China has fortunately made it possible to prolong the splendor of 1000 in an Eau de Toilette in which all the splendor of the extract is found intact. Patou, unreasonable? Is it really unreasonable to fulfill one's vocation for beauty in an original and bold spirit? If, or then Patou is unreasonable ...unreasonable until success!"

By 1976, the sizes for the parfum were to be had in either 1 oz, 1/2 oz or the 1/4 oz bottles. Previously, 1000 had to be flown in from Paris for each order, requiring a four week waiting period. Now, all three sizes, each individually registered, were instantly available at the finest stores. Each gold and crystal flacon was packaged in its own case of silk and velvet, all created, produced and sealed in France.

Bottles:

1000 de Jean Patou was available in both a crystal flacon or a replica of a Chinese jade snuff bottle that looks like a miniature vase. The jade green bottle is made of marbleized opaline glass with a Chinese red glass stopper. Patou possessed an antique jade snuff bottle which served as the inspiration for the original black and red bottle for Joy. Both it and the crystal bottles were individually numbered and registered.

1000 was also packaged in the familiar glimmering gold and crystal flacon that also houses Joy. In 1978, a limited edition was released, it was individually hand numbered registered and packaged in its own presentation case of silk and velvet.

1000 was very popular, and the great mystique of the limited edition of 1000, compelled the house of Jean Patou to develop their Eau version, which they released in 1978. The women who wore the rich and rare scent wanted a lighter version companion to the parfum. With Jean Patou's demanding quality standards and the difficulty obtaining the priceless natural ingredients, it took five years of tremendous efforts to develop Eau de 1000.

Connaissance des arts, 1978:
"The Eau de "1000" is an Eau, of course, but it is much more than an eau de toilette. Inspired by a long tradition of elegance and quality, Jean Patou today gives birth to Eau de "1000"."

The Washingtonian, 1978:
"New from Paris EAU de "1000" JEAN PATOU PARIS! Eau de 1000" by Jean Patou. A fragrance triumph. Longer-lasting than a toilet water ... the perfect companion to the limited edition perfume - "1000" de Jean Patou."

Cosmopolitan, 1978:

"Status symbol of the haut-parfum world is Jean Patou's 1000 (at $ 175 an ounce); now, Eau de 1000 puts this enchanting fragrance within a working girl's reach!"

All the mysterious floral, woody and spicy notes of the perfume are embodied in the Eau de 1000, and it is perfect as a daily indulgence. Eau de 1000 came in three different flacons, each in a crystal bottle with tortoiseshell plastic and gold tone cap.
